A 29-year-old electronic collector, Samuel Owusu, has been arraigned before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly stealing GH¢490,400 belonging to GCB Bank. Owusu, a contract staff member at the bank’s Abossey Okai branch, has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
According to the prosecution, led by Inspector Priscilla Avorgah, Owusu admitted to stealing the money between February and October 2025. *”He claimed he invested the stolen funds in an online trading platform known as ‘(link unavailable)’ in hopes of making a profit,”* Avorgah stated.
The court heard that Owusu was responsible for collecting money from customers and depositing it into their respective accounts using a dedicated phone. However, a preliminary audit conducted on October 29, 2025, revealed that GH¢490,400 had been stolen from several customer accounts.
Owusu’s actions were discovered when he was confronted by the bank manager and his supervisor. In his caution statement, Owusu stated that he did not steal the entire amount at once but gradually appropriated the funds by failing to deposit monies collected from customers into their accounts.
The case is ongoing, with Owusu remanded into custody pending further proceedings.
