In a renewed demonstration of strategic partnership, the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany has committed €49 million (approximately ₦82 billion) to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to enhance peace, security, governance, and sustainable development across the sub-region.
The financial pledge was formalized during a two-day bilateral negotiations on Development Cooperation held at the ECOWAS Commission Headquarters in Abuja on November 4–5, 2025, reaffirming Germany’s long-standing support for regional integration and stability in West Africa.
The new funding deal will focus on strengthening peace and security frameworks, advancing economic development, and improving public health systems across ECOWAS member states. It aligns with Germany’s commitment to support Africa-led initiatives that promote stability, prosperity, and resilience.
Speaking at the conclusion of the talks, representatives of both parties commended the spirit of cooperation that has characterized ECOWAS–Germany relations over the years. They underscored that the partnership remains pivotal to addressing regional challenges, including insecurity, economic recovery, and health emergencies.
The ECOWAS Commission described the engagement as a major milestone toward consolidating existing programmes that support peacekeeping, good governance, and institutional capacity-building within the subregion.
Germany, through its Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), has been a consistent development partner of ECOWAS, supporting numerous initiatives in peace support operations, trade facilitation, migration management, and regional health security.
Officials emphasized that the latest commitment will build upon previous cooperation frameworks, ensuring that ECOWAS member states are better equipped to confront the evolving security landscape, drive inclusive economic transformation, and strengthen healthcare delivery.
The meeting concluded with both sides reiterating their dedication to shared values of regional stability, good governance, and sustainable development, marking another significant step in Germany’s engagement with West Africa.
