Ghana is looking into working with Portugal’s national airline to help create a new flag carrier.
This plan was shared by President John Mahama during a meeting with Portugal’s new ambassador to Ghana, Maria Da Conceicao De, at the Jubilee House on Wednesday.
The government is currently searching for partners who can support the goal of establishing a strong national airline.
President Mahama mentioned that the experience with Portugal’s airline had been good, and that there could be room for cooperation between the two countries in this area.
Ghana has been without a national airline for several years and is aiming to set up one that can improve travel, business, and trade links across the region.
The president said that teaming up with Portugal in this way would not only support Ghana’s aviation goals but could also open doors for business in other areas.
He pointed out that Ghana is a growing market with about 35 million people, and that the country is ready for more foreign investment, especially in oil, gas, and mining.
Ghana’s location also makes it a good place for regional business and transportation.
During the meeting, President Mahama also spoke about ongoing problems in West Africa, especially the rise in extremist violence in the Sahel.
He said Ghana is working closely with countries in the European Union, such as France and the United Kingdom, to help improve peace and stability in the region.
He mentioned that Ghana is still talking with the three countries that recently left ECOWAS.
Aspecial envoy has been appointed to continue discussions with these nations to help restore trust and find a peaceful solution.
The meeting also touched on the long-standing history between Ghana and Portugal.
President Mahama recalled that the Portuguese were the first Europeans to arrive on the Ghanaian coast centuries ago and built Elmina Castle, a major historical site that still stands today.
Ambassador Maria Da Conceicao De, who came to Ghana from Portugal’s diplomatic mission in Abuja, said her country values Ghana’s work in keeping peace and hopes that more Portuguese companies will set up businesses in Ghana.
She added that both countries can benefit from stronger ties in trade and other areas.
