GUFWAN Hosts Plateau State Disability Experts, Call for Collaborative Efforts in Data, Development Partnerships

 

In a notable show of solidarity and commitment to advancing disability rights in Nigeria, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, Chief Ayuba Gufwan, warmly welcomed a coalition of disability experts from Plateau State today, 31st October, 2024.

The ES who was visibly pleased to host professionals from his home state, shared his ongoing efforts toward strengthening data collection as a fundamental part of inclusive policy-making.

Reflecting on his recent engagement with the National Population Commission, Chief Gufwan emphasized the importance of reliable data, specifically in cluster and gender verification for persons with disabilities (PWDs).

“Our mission of inclusivity is a collective struggle, a ‘we we’ mission,” he stated, stressing the need for a united approach in addressing the challenges faced by PWDs.

He also highlighted the indispensable role of development partners, particularly in funding initiatives that address the unique needs of the disability community.

Chief Gufwan’s appeal underscores a call for sustainable collaboration to support Nigeria’s disability agenda effectively.

Professor Patrick Sunday Dakum, CEO of the Institute of Virology, Nigeria, and spokesperson for the delegation, praised Chief Gufwan’s history of advocacy, particularly his work with the Beautiful Gate organization in Jos, Plateau State.

Professor Dakum commended President Tinubu’s appointment of Gufwan, affirming that his experience and personal journey as a polio survivor uniquely positioned him to lead the Commission.

“We trust that Chief Gufwan’s tenure will usher in meaningful support for polio patients and all persons with disabilities,” Professor Dakum remarked.

This meeting highlights a shared vision of inclusivity through enhanced data practices, sustainable funding, and dedicated leadership.

However, the Director Enforcement and Compliance, Barrister Ikem Uchegbulam in his vote of thanks expressed the Commission’s readiness to enforce Accessibility standards as the 5 years moratorium has elapsed.
