Guinea-Bissau’s military announced on Friday that it has thwarted an attempt to overthrow the government, just ahead of the general election campaigning period. The country’s Deputy Chief of Staff, General Mamadu Ture, revealed that several senior military officers were arrested in connection with the plot.
“This action aimed to disrupt the electoral process,” General Ture said, without specifying the number of officers arrested or the details of their plans. Brigadier General Daba Nawalna, director of a military training center near the capital Bissau, is among those arrested, accused of being one of the masterminds of the plot.
The coup attempt comes as Guinea-Bissau prepares for presidential elections on November 23, 2025. The country’s government has assured that all necessary measures are in place to ensure the safety of each candidate during the campaign period. Guinea-Bissau has a history of political instability, with multiple coups since gaining independence from Portugal in 1974. However, the country has made progress towards democracy since its 2014 presidential election.
