A gunman opened fire at Or Tor Kor Market, a busy fresh‑food venue in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district, on Monday.
At least six individuals were confirmed dead—including the attacker, who died from a self‑inflicted gunshot wound at the scene.
Security personnel were among the main victims. Local sources said four security guards and a woman were shot at the market; reports indicate one of those initially injured later died at hospital.
Authorities did not name the gunman, but surveillance clips circulated online show an older male wearing a cap, carrying a backpack and handgun, walking through a car park before the attack.
Investigators are examining possible motives and the suspect’s background.
According to initial police findings, the gunman was a 61‑year‑old former security guard who reportedly worked at the same company as some of the victims, suggesting a possible personal connection rather than a political motive.
The motive remains unconfirmed, and police are reviewing footage and witness testimony to reconstruct events and establish whether the incident was linked to broader tensions along the Thai‑Cambodian border.
Or Tor Kor Market is well known for its high‑quality fruit, seafood and produce, and attracts both locals and tourists each week.
Though guns are not unusual in Thailand, mass shootings are rare.
Past incidents included a 2023 mall shooting by a teenager, a 2022 attack at a childcare centre by an ex‑policeman, and a 2020 rampage in Nakhon Ratchasima carried out by a soldier, which resulted in dozens of fatalities.
