Gold valued at approximately ₦23.6 million, which had been hidden by a female resident at the climax of Boko Haram attacks in Northeastern Nigeria 15 years ago has been discovered, the Borno State Police Command has announced.
The coins, totaling 22 carats, along with a gold bracelet and chain, were retrieved from a site in Mallamfatori after the woman, who had fled the community during the insurgency, recently returned to seek assistance in recovering her buried valuables.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, PSC, lauded the diligent efforts of the Divisional Police Officer of Mallamfatori Division and his team, describing their professionalism and integrity as exemplary.
“Their dedication has not only recovered valuable property but also restored hope and confidence in our law enforcement agencies,” he stated.
The woman, whose identity remains confidential, expressed gratitude for the police’s swift response and honesty, emphasising that her buried treasures represent her livelihood and family heritage. The successful recovery underscores the importance of perseverance and community cooperation in fighting insecurity and reclaiming lost assets.
CP Abdulmajid reaffirmed the Police Force’s commitment to protecting lives and property across Borno State. He urged residents to continue collaborating with law enforcement agencies to foster a safer environment for all.
