I Wouldn’t Be a Widow If My Husband Listened to Me – Betty Akeredolu
The widow of former Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu
has expressed deep regret over her husband’s decision to prioritise spiritual interventions over medical treatment during his battle with prostate cancer.Â
Governor Akeredolu passed away on December 23, 2023.
In a heartfelt reflection, Mrs. Akeredolu stated, “If Aketi had listened to me, I wouldn’t be a widow.” She emphasized the importance of medical care over spiritual practices, drawing from her own experience of surviving breast cancer 27 years ago. “My recovery was due to prompt medical attention and significant lifestyle changes,” she said.
Mrs. Akeredolu warned against relying solely on spiritual or traditional remedies, noting that such approaches can lead to dire consequences. “What came out of their mountain climbing, ‘blessed’ handkerchiefs, water, olive oil, etc., from the GOs and all the noisy prayers like people possessed by demons?” she questioned.
In addition to her personal reflections, Mrs. Akeredolu criticized the current administration of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, describing it as “rudderless.” She expressed concerns about the direction of the state’s leadership following her husband’s passing.
Despite the challenges she has faced, Mrs. Akeredolu remains resolute in her political ambitions. She has declared her intention to run for the Imo East Senatorial District seat, aiming to address the underdevelopment and infrastructural deficits in her native region.
Her senatorial bid has garnered both support and criticism, with some groups supporting her dedication and vision, while others raise concerns about potential conflicts of interest.
