The 2025 edition of the U-19 Nigeria’s Independence Cup ended in thrilling fashion on Thursday as Imo State staged a dramatic comeback to defeat Kebbi State 2-1 and claim the coveted trophy at the Training Pitch 2 of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
The grand finale brought together two teams that had already faced each other in the group stage, where Kebbi triumphed 2-1. The repeat encounter promised fireworks, and both sides delivered a pulsating contest filled with tactical brilliance and youthful flair.
Against the run of play, in-form striker Tasleem Bala struck in the 27th minute to put Kebbi State ahead, taking his tournament tally to four goals. With their earlier group-stage victory in mind, Kebbi looked poised to cruise to the title.
But Imo State roared back before halftime. Their equalizer came in the 38th minute through Udeh Excellent, who calmly slotted home to restore parity. The scoreline remained 1-1 at the break, leaving both sides with everything to fight for.
The second half saw relentless end-to-end action as both teams pressed for a decisive goal. The breakthrough came in the 71st minute when Wisdom Omorodion executed a brilliant lob after a slick one-two exchange with teammate Joshia Igwe, sparking wild celebrations from the Imo bench.
With both coaches barking out instructions from their technical areas and substitutions to either change the course of the game or defend the lead, Imo State had on their nerves to seal up the game.
The pitch became crowded with fans and players alike celebrating and singing victory songs after the referee sounded the final whistle. Players of Kebbi State couldn’t hold back their tears as their coaches tried to console them, it was a sweet revenge indeed.
Meanwhile, the 3rd place game between Plateau State and Lagos State couldn’t be held due to reasons beyond the control of the organizers. Both teams through their coaches decided not playing the game would be better and a show of sportsmanship.
