Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared on Friday, August 29, 2025, that India is on track to become the world’s third largest economy in the near future.
His remarks came during a visit to Tokyo, where he joined Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to unveil a major economic partnership.
Speaking at the India–Japan Economic Forum, Mr. Modi highlighted India’s growing role as a hub for technology, renewable energy, and global supply chains.
He urged Japanese businesses to view India as a launchpad for opportunities across the Global South.
Japan responded with a pledge of ¥10 trillion (about $67 billion) in private investment for India over the next decade.
The two countries also rolled out new joint initiatives focused on artificial intelligence, supply chain resilience, small and medium-sized enterprises, and green energy financing.
The announcement comes against the backdrop of international trade tensions and weeks after former U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed India’s prospects.
Mr. Modi’s message in Tokyo was aimed at projecting confidence, while showcasing India as a trusted partner for growth in Asia and beyond.
