Police in Hamilton, Ontario, have charged a man over the fatal shooting of Harsimrat Randhawa, a 21-year-old physiotherapy student from India who was studying at Mohawk College.
The incident took place on April 17 when Randhawa was struck by a stray bullet while standing at a bus stop near Upper James Street and South Bend Road.
Investigators say she had just finished a gym session and was on her way home when a violent exchange of gunfire erupted between people in several vehicles during a dispute.
At least seven individuals in four separate cars are believed to have taken part, with two firearms involved in the confrontation.
The accused, 32-year-old Jerdaine Foster, was arrested in Niagara Falls.
He now faces charges of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted murder.
Police believe that ballistics analysis has linked one of the seized firearms to the bullet that killed Randhawa.
Authorities are continuing to investigate, aiming to identify and apprehend all others involved in the shooting.
Detectives have urged anyone with information or dashcam footage from the area on the day of the incident to come forward.
The killing has deeply affected Hamilton’s student community, particularly at Mohawk College, where friends and faculty have remembered Randhawa as a promising young woman who came to Canada to further her education.
