Iran is reviewing a letter from Donald Trump regarding potential negotiations and will issue a formal response after careful examination, the Foreign Ministry announced.
The statement comes amid ongoing tensions between the two nations over sanctions and nuclear policy.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian have already dismissed Trump’s outreach, viewing it as insincere and coercive. They argue that previous attempts at talks were used to pressure Iran rather than engage in genuine diplomacy.
Despite the leadership’s rejection, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei confirmed that a diplomatic response is being prepared. He stressed that Iran would not publicize the contents of Trump’s letter but would reply through official channels after thorough review.
The Iranian government remains skeptical of Washington’s intentions, pointing out that while the US expresses willingness for dialogue, it continues to impose new sanctions on Tehran. The spokesperson stated that real diplomacy requires mutual recognition of interests and a commitment to agreements, which he accused the US of ignoring.
Tensions between Iran and the US have persisted since Trump’s first term when he withdrew from the 2015 nuclear agreement. That deal, which was negotiated between Iran and global powers, placed strict limits on Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for lifting economic sanctions. Iran maintains that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes and insists it complies with international law.
