In Tokyo, a disturbing case has emerged where a 56-year-old man kept his deceased father’s body hidden in a wardrobe for two years to avoid paying funeral expenses.
The man, Nobuhiko Suzuki, was arrested after neighbors grew suspicious when his Chinese restaurant remained closed for a week, prompting them to call the police.
Authorities visited Suzuki’s home and discovered the skeletal remains of his father, who had died in January 2023 at the age of 86. Suzuki admitted to the police that he found his father dead when he returned home from work but decided to hide the body rather than report the death. His reason was simple: he could not afford the high cost of a funeral.
Police noted that Suzuki initially struggled with guilt but eventually justified his actions by blaming his father for the situation. In addition to facing charges related to hiding the body, Suzuki is also under investigation for embezzling his late father’s pension payments.
The discovery has stirred a wide range of reactions on social media. Some users speculated that Suzuki may have been motivated by financial gain, seeking to continue collecting pension money. Others expressed sympathy, pointing out the emotional and financial challenges people face after the death of a family member.
One user shared their own experience, recalling the overwhelming costs and confusion they faced after losing a loved one, while another simply called Suzuki a bad person for disrespecting his father’s remains.
The tragic case has highlighted how the heavy burden of funeral costs and financial hardship can drive individuals to desperate decision.
