The Deputy Governor of Cross River State, Dr Peter Odey, has described the defection of Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress as a game changing political development that will reshape the state’s political landscape.
Dr Odey said Senator Jarigbe is joining the ruling party at a crucial time and expressed optimism that his experience, grassroots appeal, and political influence will significantly strengthen the APC in Cross River and at the national level.
He made the remarks when he received Senator Jarigbe at his residence in Calabar as part of the Senator’s ongoing consultation visits ahead of his formal entry into the party.
The Deputy Governor welcomed the Senator and urged him to broaden his consultations across the state to build a united and formidable political front anchored on peace, inclusiveness, and collective commitment to development.
Senator Jarigbe, who had earlier met with the Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly and other lawmakers, said the consultations are aimed at harmonising interests, fostering understanding, and securing the support of key stakeholders for his political direction.
It would be recalled that the Senator confirmed his defection to the APC after meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He has formally notified Governor Bassey Otu, the APC State Chairman, Alphonsus Eba, the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and lawmakers from Cross River North of his decision.
According to Senator Jarigbe, the move aligns with his commitment to support the re election of President Tinubu and Governor Otu, and to strengthen the party’s structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Senator was accompanied on the visit to the Deputy Governor by notable political figures including Chief Timmy Tom, Chief Higgins Peter, Chief Austin Edibe, Chief Thomas Odu, and Mr Jimmie Aninege among others.
Political analysts believe Senator Jarigbe’s defection has already shifted the political equation in Cross River North, with many of his loyalists and allies expected to follow him into the APC. They predict that the development will further weaken the PDP’s presence in the zone and solidify the APC’s dominance in the state.
