The All Progressives Congress (APC) is on track to grow its number of governors to 26, as Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang prepares to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling party.
According to sources within the APC’s National Working Committee (NWC), Mutfwang’s defection is already a done deal. He reportedly met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu after informing the APC National Chairman of his decision last week.
The APC chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda—who actually ran against Mutfwang in the last governorship election—was said to have arranged the governor’s meeting at the Presidential Villa. This confirms that internal resistance to his defection, especially from Yilwatda, was unfounded.
One senior APC official told The Nation that despite Mutfwang’s long-standing public loyalty to the PDP, he has now made up his mind to join the APC ahead of the 2027 elections. The source said:
“He informed the chairman last Tuesday, and by Sunday, he was already with the president.”
The ruling party is also counting Taraba Governor Agbu Kefas as one of its own, even though his formal reception ceremony was postponed out of respect for the national atmosphere. With Kefas now considered an APC member, the party says it effectively controls 26 states.
Governor Mutfwang is expected to be officially welcomed into the APC soon, marking another significant shift ahead of the next election cycle.
