A leading member of opposition People’s Democratic Party, PDP, in Kogi State, Usman Austin Okai, has retracted his allegations of N13.4 billion misappropriation against the Kogi State government, led by Governor Usman Ahmed Ododo.
Okai had in a press conference in February, alleged that the governor misappropriated N13.4 billion. However, in a twist, while addressing the press in Abuja, today, 10th April, 2025, he clarified that the actual amount involved was N3 billion, citing new information that contradicted his earlier statement.
Okai emphasised the importance of accountability and transparency in governance. “We’ve gotten more information from the financial team of the state, which contradicts the information we had as of February,” he stated.
Okai stressed that his actions were driven by a desire to hold the government accountable, rather than personal grudges against the governor.
The leading opposition voice also addressed criticism suggesting his actions were motivated by personal gain or political rivalry. “I’m a politician, and those people who are afraid of the 2027 election, who are afraid of my rising political profile, created that story to undermine my personality and make me look bad before the public.” He maintained that his people trust him and believe in his integrity.
Okai remains committed to his activism, ensuring the government remains transparent and accountable. “We would ensure the government is checked in an appropriate way, and once we check the government with facts and figures, there won’t be any problem.”
