The Labour Party’s National Executive Council (NEC) has condemned a parallel NEC meeting held in Transcorp Hilton on July 18, 2025, describing it as illegal and unconstitutional.
The meeting, which attempted to rename an illegal caretaker committee set up in Umuahia last year as an Interim National Working Committee, was deemed to be in contravention of the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act 2022.
According to the Labour Party NEC, “no matter how illegality is decorated, it cannot be legal. Renaming the Caretaker Committee, Interim NWC does not remove its illegality.” The NEC meeting, which was attended by members of the National Working Committee, National officers, State Chairmen, and stakeholders, reaffirmed its confidence in the leadership of Barr. Julius Abure-led National Working Committee.
The NEC also approved the conduct of State, Local Government, and Ward Congress as scheduled by the National Working Committee in line with the party’s constitution and other extant laws. Furthermore, the NEC reiterated that the Labour Party will not be part of any coalition for the 2027 general election, citing its distinct ideology, programs, philosophy, and manifestos.
Sen. Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Vice Presidential candidate of the 2023 General Election, was commended for identifying with the leadership and declaring his interest for the 2027 general election. The NEC called on all party members to disregard the outcome of the parallel meeting and obey the lawful directives of the party leadership.
“NEC believes that the coalition of 2023 is bigger than any other coalition. We will therefore rebuild, reconcile, and consolidate the gains of the 2023 general election,” the party stated.
