Lack of Political Ideology Reason For Political Defections, Says Makinde

Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has identified the lack of a party ideological foundation as the reason behind the frequent defections by Nigerian politicians.

Mr Makinde said this in Ibadan on Thursday while speaking at the public presentation of a book titled ‘Omituntun’s Political Ideology of Seyi Makinde’.

The governor, who was represented at the occasion by his special adviser on media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, maintained that the situation had become a major problem that shouldn’t be ignored.

Mr Makinde, claiming that his political style was distinct, explained that his actions, policies, and governance style had evolved over the years to become easily recognisable and impactful.

“It’s not politics for the sake of power, but politics for impact. It’s governance for the good of the people,” he said.

The chairman of the occasion, Yemi Farounbi, lauded Mr Makinde’s visionary leadership style, describing him as “a rare breed of a leader who is committed to public service”.

According to the book reviewer, Wale Adewumi, the publication reflects the heart of a transformational leader and serves as both a mirror and a guide for future generations.

“The book doesn’t just document policies; it captures the spirit of a leader who governs with integrity, unity, and service; challenging others to lead with the same sense of purpose,” he said.

Earlier in his welcome address, the book author, Babatunde Osumah, said Mr Makinde had, through the Omitutun political ideology, showcased great leadership qualities to be emulated by successive administrations.

Mr Osumah explained that the publication sought to document and analyse the Omituntun ideology, which he described as a framework built on renewal, progress, and people-oriented reforms.

“Omituntun is not just a slogan; it is a living ideology that continues to shape Oyo State’s journey toward inclusive growth and social justice,” Mr Osumah said.
