A building collapse in Lagos on Friday night left one person dead and eight others rescued after hours of search and rescue.
The incident happened around 8 p.m. at 333 Borno Way, Alagomeji, Ebute-Metta, in Lagos Mainland Local Government Area.
The four-storey structure, which was still under construction, suddenly gave way, causing panic among nearby residents who fled the scene for safety. Emergency teams arrived shortly after and worked through the night to save those trapped in the rubble.
According to reports from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, all eight trapped individuals, identified as adult male construction workers, were pulled out alive by early Saturday morning. They were immediately taken to hospital for medical treatment. Rescue teams continued clearing debris to ensure no one else remained under the collapsed structure.
The Nigeria Emergency Management Agency later confirmed that one body was found at the site and taken to the morgue for further examination. The deceased has not yet been identified.
Officials from different state and federal emergency agencies, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, and the police, were all on ground to manage the rescue operation and maintain order.
In a related incident on Friday, residents of Ikeja raised concerns over a strong gas smell in the area. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service explained that the odour was from a controlled release of gas particles by Gaslink’s parent company, Axxela Group. The agency assured the public that the situation had been neutralized and posed no threat. Safety patrols were deployed around Ikeja to monitor the area and prevent panic.
Authorities urged residents to remain calm and continue their normal activities as the collapsed building site was being cleared and the gas leak fully contained.
