The Lagos State Government has revealed that it responded to more than 13,700 emergency situations between 2008 and 2025. Out of this number, 2,400 were fire incidents across different parts of the state.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, gave the update on Thursday while speaking ahead of the National SEMA Conference.
The three-day event, which will run from October 2 to 4, 2025, in Lagos, is being organised by LASEMA in partnership with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
The conference will bring together government officials, private sector leaders, security agencies, civil society groups, and international partners to discuss ways to improve response systems at the state level. Technical sessions, keynote presentations, and a live simulation exercise at the Emergency and Relief Camp in Igando are also planned as part of the programme.
Officials said Lagos was chosen as host because of its record in managing disasters over the years. Since 2008, the state has handled a wide range of incidents, including structural collapses, road crashes, hazardous spills, medical emergencies, and large-scale disasters. Records show that in just the first eight months of 2025 alone, more than 1,450 emergencies were managed. In 2023, over 3,000 casualties were attended to.
Data further revealed that the state has dealt with more than 4,600 road accidents and thousands of other emergencies, alongside the 2,400 fire outbreaks. New interventions, including child-focused rescue strategies introduced in 2023, as well as investment in technology, training, and collaboration with federal agencies, have contributed to better outcomes for residents.
