Libyan authorities have repatriated 80 Nigerian nationals as part of efforts to curb irregular migration and ease overcrowding in detention centers. The deportation, coordinated by Libya’s Department for Combating Illegal Migration (DCIM) and the Nigerian Consulate in Tripoli, followed judicial orders from the Libyan Public Prosecutor’s Office.
“The repatriation exercise took place through Mitiga International Airport in Tripoli, with the Nigerian Consulate working closely with DCIM to ensure all returnees received proper documentation and consular clearance,” said Migrant Rescue Watch, an organization monitoring migrant welfare in Libya.
This move aligns with Libya’s strategy to address overcrowding in detention centers and improve diplomatic collaboration. The 80 deported Nigerians were among those detained for attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe through unsafe and illegal routes.
Libya remains a major transit hub for migrants from sub-Saharan Africa seeking better opportunities in Europe. Human rights groups have raised concerns about poor conditions and mistreatment of migrants in Libyan detention centers.
