Man Sets Fire at Milan Malpensa Airport, Terminal Partially Evacuated

A dramatic incident unfolded at Milan’s Malpensa Airport on Monday when a man set fire to a check-in desk inside Terminal 1, prompting a partial evacuation of one of Italy’s busiest air travel hubs.

Footage shared on social media showed flames breaking out at a counter as passengers rushed to safety.

The same video captured the suspect smashing digital screens with a hammer before being confronted by several individuals.

One bystander struck the man on the head with a fire extinguisher, allowing others to pin him to the ground until police intervened.

The Lombardy Airports Association confirmed that the man was arrested and the blaze quickly contained, though passengers were warned of possible delays and cancellations.

According to Corriere della Sera, the incident took place around 11:00 local time (09:00 GMT) after emergency services received reports of an “agitated man” inside the terminal.

No injuries have been reported though video Showed large numbers of travelers fleeing the area in fear.

Photos later revealed long queues outside the terminal as smoke spread through the building.

Airport firefighters swiftly tackled the flames, but heavy smoke forced the evacuation of parts of the terminal “for safety reasons,” a spokesperson told Corriere della Sera.

Officials stressed that despite the temporary disruption, there had been no significant impact on overall air traffic.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear. Authorities have not yet released details about the man in custody but say investigations are ongoing.

Milan Malpensa, a major gateway for international travelers and a popular hub for British tourists, has since reopened the affected sections.

Passengers are being advised to check with airlines for possible delays and to allow extra time for departures.
