Mercurial Media Personality Ambrose Gowong Gowong Appointed Head of New Media at NOUN

The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has appointed a seasoned and versatile media professional, Mr. Ambrose B. Gowong, as the Head of its newly established New Media Unit, in a move that underscores the institution’s renewed emphasis on strategic digital communication and institutional visibility.

The appointment, approved by the Vice-Chancellor and conveyed via an internal memorandum dated March 13, 2026, positions Gowong at the forefront of the university’s digital engagement drive, with responsibility for shaping narratives, managing content ecosystems, and strengthening NOUN’s presence across emerging media platforms.

A mercurial media personality with a reputation for creative dexterity and compelling public engagement, Gowong is expected to bring depth and innovation to the university’s communication framework. His portfolio will cover content development, brand positioning, media monitoring and intelligence, as well as digital archiving and documentation—key elements in an increasingly competitive and information-driven academic environment.

In a complementary role, he has also been designated as the official compere for all social functions of the university, a responsibility that aligns with his well-known flair for stagecraft and audience engagement. Academic ceremonies, however, will continue to be moderated by the Registrar in accordance with established tradition.

Gowong’s appointment is further reinforced by a solid academic pedigree in communication and media studies. He holds a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Mass Communication from Kaduna Polytechnic, a Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Mass Communication from the National Open University of Nigeria, as well as a Master’s degree in Mass Communication from NOUN. He also earned a Master’s degree in Development Communication from Kaduna State University and is currently pursuing a PhD in Mass Communication at the same institution.

The establishment of the New Media Unit within the Office of the Vice-Chancellor reflects NOUN’s strategic intent to centralise and professionalise its communication channels, ensuring coherence, timeliness, and accuracy in information dissemination.

Stakeholders across faculties, directorates, units and study centres have been enjoined to collaborate closely with the new unit to enable it effectively deliver on its mandate.

Industry watchers note that the choice of Gowong signals a deliberate fusion of professional competence and academic depth, positioning the university to better navigate the rapidly evolving media landscape while consolidating its institutional voice.
