The Honourable Minister (State) for Labour and Employment, Barr. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has lauded the Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS) of the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
Onyejeocha who made the commendation, lauded the scheme’s inclusivity, stating in a Thursday statement by her media adviser, Mr. Emameh Gabriel, that it “accommodates all.”
She described the RHIESS launch in her home state, Abia and all other states of federation, including the FCT, as a positive step towards a more equitable society.
The maiden edition of RHIESS targets 250 vulnerable elderly citizens aged 65 and above in each state, FCT, and veterans from the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA). Each beneficiary received N100,000 to ease the economic burden and improve their festive season.
A total of N950 million, approved by the RHIESS Governing Board, was distributed across the states and FCT. Each state received N25 million, demonstrating a commitment to nationwide coverage without discrimination.
The Minister expressed her gratitude to the First Lady, calling her a “mother to all” for initiating RHIESS and its contributions to building a stronger Nigeria.
She highlighted the scheme’s focus on elder care, including healthcare, food, and cash gifts, as an example of impactful governance and vision for assisting the underprivileged.
“I truly want to thank the First Lady for this great initiative that cuts across all the state of the federation to make this impact on humanity, especially in the healthcare of our people,”
“It is my prayer that we all take a cue from the First Lady and learn the virtues of assisting the less-privileged and the most vulnerable in the society, because as you give, you are making sacrifice for more rewards from God who is the great rewarder”, Onyejeocha stated.
The Minister further emphasised the importance of fostering a sense of belonging and community for the elderly.
“They have been through things you can’t imagine. Throughout their lives, they have weathered the many storms of life. At this time in their lives, they need a sense of belongingness. This initiative will continue to provide them a sense of community, a social life, that empowers and energises them”, the Minister stated.
