MTN Nigeria has strengthened its contribution to government revenue by remitting a total of ₦878.7 billion in taxes, levies, and duties to federal and state authorities in the 2025 financial year. The figure represents a 15 per cent rise compared to the previous year, according to its 2025 Sustainability Report.
The report shows a steady upward trend in the company’s tax contributions, rising from ₦543.9 billion in 2023 to ₦764 billion in 2024, and then to ₦878.7 billion in 2025. This reflects an overall increase of about 62 per cent within two years.
MTN attributed the growth in tax payments to its improved financial performance, noting that it recovered from earlier foreign exchange-related losses to record a profit after tax of ₦1.11 trillion in 2025. Its total revenue also climbed significantly by 54.8 per cent, reaching ₦5.20 trillion, while operating profit rose to ₦2.08 trillion from ₦778.2 billion in the previous year.
The taxes paid covered company income tax, value-added tax, import duties, spectrum fees, Nigerian Communications Commission levies, and contributions under infrastructure tax credit schemes.
Beyond taxes, the telecoms giant also invested in national infrastructure through the Road Infrastructure Tax Credit Scheme, committing ₦202.8 billion to the reconstruction of the 110-kilometre Enugu–Onitsha Expressway.
In addition, MTN reported progress under its Rural and Urban Terrestrial Infrastructure programme, which reached 50 per cent completion in 2025. The company also received approval for an additional ₦23 billion tax credit aimed at expanding telecom and fibre coverage in underserved areas.
The report further highlighted MTN’s growing support for the local economy, revealing that 62 per cent of its procurement spending in 2025 went to Nigerian suppliers, up from 59.6 per cent in the previous year. It said this aligns with government policies on local content development and supports sectors such as construction, logistics, software, and power.
Operationally, MTN expanded its network to 2,087 active base stations nationwide. Its subscriber base rose to 85.4 million by the third quarter of 2025, while active data users increased to 51.1 million, supported by smartphone penetration of 65.1 per cent.
The company also renewed its 800MHz spectrum licence, extending its validity to December 2034.
