The National Peace Committee (NPC), led by Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, has disclosed that it faced intense pressure to halt the collation of results or request the cancellation of the February 25, 2023, presidential election, which saw Bola Ahmed Tinubu emerge victorious.
According to Gen. Abubakar, the pressure was largely related to the 25% threshold in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. “We were under immense pressure to either stop the collation of results or ask INEC to cancel the election,” he revealed during the presentation of the NPC’s 106-page report on the general election in Abuja.
The report, titled “Nigeria Pursuit of Electoral Compliance: National Peace Committee NPC 2023 General Election Report,” also noted that some individuals demanded the cancellation of the election, citing non-adherence to the tenets of the peace accord signed by candidates.
Gen. Abubakar emphasized that the NPC withstood these pressures, ensuring the integrity of the electoral process. “We resisted those pressures and ensured that the election was seen to a logical conclusion,” he stated.
The NPC’s report provides a comprehensive overview of the 2023 general election, highlighting areas of improvement and recommending measures to enhance electoral compliance in future elections.
