The National Blood Service Commission (NBSC) has announced its collaboration with the National Emergency Medical Services Ambulance System (NEMSAS) to enhance emergency services in Nigeria, particularly in maternal health. This partnership aims to reduce maternal deaths caused by obstetrics hemorrhage, a leading cause of maternal mortality in the country.
Prof. Saleh Yuguda, Director General of NBSC, pledged the commission’s support to NEMSAS, highlighting the importance of the Commission’s One Million Strategic Blood Reserve in addressing blood-related emergencies. This reserve will help ensure blood sufficiency, considering blood advocacy and availability.
Dr. Saidu Ahmed , National Programme Manager ably represented by Dr Emuren Pere, Head of Operations at NEMSAS outlined the services’ efforts in establishing a comprehensive medical emergency services ambulance system. He emphasized the initiative’s role in sustaining rural medical emergencies, especially in improving maternal transport.
To facilitate a seamless collaboration, a joint committee has been established to address any bottlenecks and develop a concept note that will serve as a working document. This partnership recognizes the emergency ambulance as a vital tool for blood services, ensuring timely and effective response to medical emergencies.
This collaboration is a significant step towards improving maternal health outcomes in Nigeria, and both organizations are committed to working together to achieve this goal.
