Nigeria has reaffirmed its strong relationship with the United States as both nations navigate a shifting global economy.
This renewed commitment was highlighted during the 65th anniversary celebration of the Nigerian-American Chamber of Commerce (NACC), where top officials gathered to discuss shared goals and future cooperation.
The event, held in Lagos, also marked the inauguration of Sheriff Balogun as the new president of the NACC. During the celebration, Nigeria’s Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, emphasized the enduring partnership between Nigeria and the US, describing it as both strategic and resilient. Despite rising global uncertainty, particularly due to the recent wave of tariffs and trade shifts initiated by the United States, Nigeria is keen to maintain and grow its economic and diplomatic ties.
Dr. Oduwole pointed out the NACC’s pivotal role in fostering mutual growth, serving as a bridge for trade, investment, and people-to-people connections. She assured stakeholders that Nigeria is focused on deepening collaboration with the US, particularly in trade and industry, through stable and forward-looking policies.
Sheriff Balogun, in his inaugural address as president of the chamber, outlined an ambitious vision built on three core pillars: expansion, innovation, and impact. He pledged to boost trade and investment through more frequent dialogue with American businesses, deeper engagement with government institutions, and strategic outreach initiatives.
One of Balogun’s key goals is to expand the chamber’s reach by opening new branches across Nigeria and adding more chapters in the US. Currently, the NACC operates three American branches in Maryland, Atlanta, and Houston. The new leadership aims to support small and medium-sized businesses in Nigeria, promote entrepreneurship, and improve access to financing and international markets.
Balogun also announced the start of a major project: the construction of the chamber’s permanent headquarters. This facility, he said, will serve as a hub for nurturing future Nigerian leaders and entrepreneurs while symbolizing the chamber’s long-term vision and commitment.
The event brought together a diverse group of dignitaries, including representatives of foreign embassies, state governors, and traditional rulers. Awards were presented to individuals and organizations that have contributed significantly to the development of trade relations and national growth.
As the global economic environment grows more complex, both Nigeria and the US appear determined to use their shared history and mutual interests as a platform for future cooperation. Through efforts led by institutions like the NACC, the countries hope to create stronger business ties, open new markets, and build lasting prosperity.
