Nigeria and China have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their relationship, with a focus on trade and cooperation. During a visit from China’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chen Xiao Doing, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, emphasised Nigeria’s dedication to the ‘One China’ policy.
“The visit of the Chinese Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs is reaffirming and consolidating some of the gains of the recent activities between Nigeria and China… Nigeria continues to maintain its commitment to a one China Policy,” Tuggar stated.
Tuggar highlighted the significance of the partnership between Nigeria and China, citing Nigeria’s position as the largest country on the continent in terms of GDP and population. “The partnership between Nigeria and China is one that is very important because we are both trading nations,” he added.
In response, Chen Xiao Doing conveyed greetings from Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wang Yi, and emphasized China’s importance on growing relations with Nigeria. “Nigeria is a major country in Africa and is also one of China’s key strategic partners in Africa… China attaches great importance to growing relations with Nigeria,” he said.
Chen also looked forward to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s upcoming visit to China, stating, “I believe that the upcoming visit by President Tinubu will help further deepen the strategic partnership between our two countries and strengthen the cooperation between our two countries in various fields.”
