In a landmark moment for regional cooperation and economic development, President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria and President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea signed a comprehensive agreement on the Gulf of Guinea Pipeline Project in Malabo on Wednesday evening.
“This agreement will open up new opportunities for gas exploration and employment,” President Tinubu said, highlighting the significance of the deal. “We have discussed issues related to the creation of employment, food security, multilateral relations, and conflict resolution mechanisms on the continent.”
The agreement covers key aspects of the gas pipeline project, including legislative and regulatory measures, establishment and operation, transit of natural gas, ownership, and general principles.
President Mbasogo emphasized the importance of deepening cooperation between the two nations, stating, “Bilateral relations with Nigeria over many years have been rewarding… The signing of this agreement is strategic for Africa’s development.”
The deal is seen as a major step towards promoting peace, stability, and economic growth in the region. As President Tinubu noted, “We have to look inwards to solve problems ourselves… Instead of the crisis and conflicts that we see in some parts of Africa, we have to navigate our way through problems.”
The signing ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials from both countries, including ministers of foreign affairs, justice, defense, and petroleum.
This historic agreement marks a new chapter in Nigeria-Equatorial Guinea relations and paves the way for increased cooperation on regional and global issues, including Africa’s bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
