In a significant development, President Bola Tinubu announced a scholarship scheme for students from the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) during a joint press conference with Saint Lucia’s Prime Minister, Philip Pierre, in Gros Islet on Monday. The programme is set to begin in the next academic year.
This initiative, as detailed by presidential spokesperson Mr Bayo Onanuga, is part of a broader strategy to enhance cooperation between Nigeria and the OECS, focusing on education, trade, and development. President Tinubu also mentioned plans to implement visa waivers for OECS diplomatic and official passport holders, reinforcing the commitment to deepen ties between the regions.
Emphasising the value of collaboration, Tinubu stated that the scholarship programme was created in partnership with OECS member states, with a committee established to ensure effective implementation. He remains optimistic about overcoming potential challenges, advocating for a direct approach to achieving collaborative goals.
Prime Minister Pierre responded positively, labelling the initiative as timely and a clear sign of solidarity, with plans for students to commence their studies in Nigeria next academic year. He added that visa facilitation is a critical agenda item for the Nigeria–OECS Joint Committee, alongside trade and tourism enhancements.
