Adeola Ogunmola Sowemimo, a 31-year-old Nigerian pilot, has made history by becoming the first female pilot from the country to fly the Boeing 787 Dreamliner for Qatar Airways.
“I am thrilled to be part of this milestone,” Sowemimo said. “It is the Lord’s doing, and it’s marvelous in my sight.”
Sowemimo’s achievement is a significant milestone in the aviation industry, where females have been underrepresented. “Women drive double-decker London red buses. Women drive BRT buses in Lagos. Why not fly a plane?” she said.
Arunma Oteh, a former World Bank Vice-President, congratulated Sowemimo on her achievement, tweeting, “Congratulations Captain Adeola Ogunmola Sowemimo, making Nigeria proud.”
Sowemimo’s journey to becoming a pilot began at the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, Zaria Kaduna, where she completed her standard aviation course. She later attended Sunrise Aviation Inc. in Florida, USA, to conclude her standard pilot course.
“It’s a dream come true,” Sowemimo said. “I am proud to be an inspiration to African women and girls who want to pursue a career in aviation.”
Sowemimo’s achievement is a testament to her hard work and determination. “If women work hard, they are capable of achieving incredible feats and would be recognized for their hard work and determination,” she said.
