The Nigerian government has reacted strongly to the recent killing of two of its citizens in South Africa.
The victims, both Nigerian traders, were shot dead in Durban by armed men who reportedly stormed their workplace wearing masks.
The killings have sparked fresh concerns over the safety of Nigerians living abroad, particularly in South Africa, where past incidents of violence have raised diplomatic tensions.
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) confirmed the victims as Austin and Ayo. According to available reports, the men were inside their business premises when the attackers entered and opened fire. The assailants fled the scene before authorities could arrive.
In a statement released after the incident, NiDCOM condemned the attack and described it as senseless and brutal.
The commission called for a swift investigation and urged South African law enforcement to find and prosecute those responsible.
The Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria has also begun its own follow-up on the matter, working closely with local authorities.
This latest incident has renewed worries about the implementation of the Early Warning Signal platform—a bilateral agreement between Nigeria and South Africa aimed at preventing violent incidents involving nationals of both countries.
The platform, agreed upon years ago, is meant to improve coordination and communication on security matters. However, Nigerian officials say it has yet to function properly.
NiDCOM also appealed for calm among Nigerians living in South Africa, asking them to avoid acts of retaliation.
The commission assured that the Nigerian government is committed to protecting the rights and lives of its citizens wherever they reside.
The Acting Nigerian High Commissioner has called on South African authorities to treat the case seriously and take urgent steps to improve the safety of Nigerians across the country.
He also called for a full autopsy and a thorough investigation to uncover the motive and those behind the killings.
Many Nigerians have expressed frustration on social media, urging both governments to take stronger measures to stop such attacks.
Meanwhile, the families of the victims are calling for justice and support as they mourn their loss.
