NILDS Pledges Support for ECOWAS Parliament, Hails First Female Speaker

The Director General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), Prof. Abubakar O. Sulaiman, has pledged the institute’s support for the ECOWAS Parliament, particularly under the leadership of its first female speaker, Hajia Maimunatu Ibrahima.

Prof. Sulaiman, while receiving the staff and management of ECOWAS Parliament, at the institute’s complex, located along airport road, Abuja, on Friday, June 7, 2024 expressed his optimism that the new leadership would help address the challenges facing the sub-region.

He emphasised the importance of capacity building for parliamentarians and expressed his confidence in the speaker’s ability to drive gender inclusivity in policymaking.
“We believe that women should be given the right position when it comes to policymaking,” Prof. Sulaiman said. “Your election is a good omen to all African women, and we believe you will prove that women can do better.”

The Director General also highlighted NILDS’ commitment to supporting the ECOWAS Parliament, citing the institute’s role as a knowledge hub for parliamentarians.He assured the speaker of the institute’s partnership in achieving the goals set by the ECOWAS Parliament, particularly in capacity building, conferences, and research.

The visit is a significant step towards strengthening the partnership between NILDS and ECOWAS Parliament, with a focus on promoting gender inclusivity, capacity building, and regional development.

Earlier, while intimating her host of intent of the visit, the speaker, Hajia Maimunatu Ibrahima, acknowledged the enormous challenges facing the sub-region, while assuring that with the support of NILDS and other relevant institutions,  she’ll do her best.

“Our sub-region is currently grappling with numerous challenges. I am hopeful that NILDS will contribute to capacity building for our parliament, enhancing their abilities to address these issues effectively.

“Furthermore, I believe that regional collaboration on security, development, and stability will be crucial in maintaining the integrity of our sub-region and fostering a sense of reassurance.“I am counting on your support, as well as that of other officials, to ensure the sub-region’s progress and prosperity.

“I also look forward to exploring how institutions can work together to address the challenges facing our sub-region,” She said.

Highlights of the visit include presentation of the institute’s publications and others insignia.
