The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced a nationwide protest on Tuesday, February 4, to oppose the planned 50% increase in telecom tariffs.
The decision was made during the NLC’s National Administrative Council (NAC) meeting, aiming to warn the government against policies that could worsen economic hardship for Nigerians.
The NLC had earlier rejected the tariff hike approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on January 22, calling it an attack on workers’ welfare.
NLC President Joe Ajaero criticized the decision, stating that the hike would push telecom costs from 10% to 15% of an average worker’s N70,000 minimum wage, making communication unaffordable.
He vowed that the labor movement would resist policies that deepen poverty and inequality, urging the government to prioritize citizens over corporate interests.
