The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals have arrested six individuals during a raid on illegal mining and sand dredging sites in Akwa Ibom.
The operation, code-named Operation Hayakin Kogo, targeted unlawful mining activities that have caused significant economic and environmental damage.
The NSCDC noted that these illegal operations have resulted in substantial revenue losses for the Federal Government, severe environmental degradation, and health risks for local communities.
Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, Commandant General of the NSCDC, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to safeguarding critical national assets, particularly in the solid minerals sector. “The solid minerals sector is crucial to Nigeria’s economic growth, and we are resolute in our efforts to eliminate illegal mining activities that undermine its potential,” he stated.
Commander of the Mining Marshals, ACC Attah John Onoja, issued a stern warning to those engaging in illegal mining, urging them to cease their activities or face the full weight of the law.
“Anyone wishing to operate legally must approach the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development and the Mining Cadastre Office for proper licensing and regularization,” Onoja emphasized.

The operation is part of the NSCDC’s broader initiative to enforce mining laws across the country. The agency aims to protect mining sites from unlawful encroachments and ensure compliance with regulations to benefit both the government and citizens.
The NSCDC vowed to continue its crackdown on illegal mining operations, with more raids expected in the coming months. The arrested suspects will face prosecution to deter others from engaging in similar unlawful activities.
The agency called on community members to support its efforts by reporting illegal mining activities and helping to protect the environment and the nation’s resources.
