A bill sponsored by Senator Ned Nwoko, senator representing Delta North, to upgrade the Federal College of Education (Technical) Asaba into the Federal University of Technology, Asaba, has successfully passed its first reading in the Senate on Wednesday, October 2, 2024.
The bill, titled “A Bill for An Act to Alter the Federal Universities of Technology Act, Cap.F23, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, to Provide for the Upgrade of the Federal College of Education (Technical) Asaba to the Federal University of Technology, Asaba, and for Related Matters,” seeks to amend the existing law governing federal universities of technology.
The proposed legislation aims to amend Section 1(1) of the Federal Universities of Technology Act by adding a new subsection (f), which will formally establish the Federal University of Technology, Asaba, as one of Nigeria’s recognized federal universities of technology.”
According to the explanatory memorandum attached to the bill, the upgrade of the college to a university is intended to broaden its academic scope and align the institution with national efforts to promote advanced education in technology.
The bill’s primary goal is to enhance the institution’s capacity to contribute to technological research and education, further driving innovation and development in the country.
