The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 65-year-old man, Chibuike Azubike, for allegedly impersonating a traditional ruler by parading himself as the Obi of Lagos.
He was apprehended alongside three accomplices during an attempt to stage an unlawful unveiling ceremony. The suspects include Chief Chibuzor Ani, Chief Martins Nwaodika, and Ikechukwu Franklin Nnadi.
The group had planned to unveil a prototype of a purported N1.5 billion Palace of the Obi of Lagos State on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at Apple Hall in Amuwo Odofin.
Police authorities, however, swiftly sealed off the venue to prevent public disturbance and protect citizens from being deceived.
The Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, confirmed that tactical teams were deployed to maintain law and order. He warned residents to be vigilant against individuals exploiting cultural institutions for fraudulent purposes.
All four suspects are currently being held at the command headquarters in Ikeja, pending further investigation and arraignment.
This incident recalls a similar arrest in April 2023, when Frederick Nwajagu, the Eze Ndigbo of Ajao Estate, was detained for unlawfully claiming a chieftaincy title.
