The Obong of Calabar and Treaty King of the Efik Kingdom, His Eminence Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V, has pledged full support for the 66th National Council on Health (NCH) scheduled to hold in Cross River State from November 17 to 21, 2025.
The royal endorsement came during a courtesy visit by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry Egbe Ayuk, who led a delegation of senior health officials and stakeholders to the Obong’s Palace in Calabar to formally brief and invite the monarch to the event.
Speaking during the visit, Dr. Ayuk described the forthcoming NCH as a landmark achievement for Cross River State, noting that it would be the first time the state hosts Nigeria’s highest policy-making body on health matters. He emphasized the importance of traditional institutions in promoting public health and expressed appreciation for the Obong’s consistent support for state initiatives.
“We came to seek His Eminence’s blessings because his royal endorsement symbolizes unity, peace, and strength,” Dr. Ayuk said. “Having his presence at the opening of this national event will lend both cultural and moral significance to the discussions that will shape the future of Nigeria’s health sector.”
The Commissioner highlighted that the state’s health sector has undergone critical reforms under Governor Bassey Otu’s administration, aimed at improving access to care and achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) for residents.
Responding, the Obong of Calabar commended the Health Commissioner for his leadership and dedication to improving public health outcomes across the state. He described Dr. Ayuk as a visionary leader who is passionate about the well-being of the people, citing his recent intervention at a health facility in Adiabo as evidence of his commitment.
“I am deeply impressed by the level of responsibility and empathy shown by the Commissioner,” the monarch said. “We will give our full royal support to ensure the success of this important national event.”
The Obong assured that he would personally attend the opening ceremony of the NCH, describing it as a milestone for both the state and the traditional institution.
The delegation also included Dr. Ekpo Ekpo Bassey, Special Adviser to the Governor on Health; Mrs. Uduak Spencer Efem, Special Adviser on Nursing Education and Training; and other senior government officials.
The 66th National Council on Health will bring together top policymakers, medical professionals, and development partners from across the country to deliberate on strategies for strengthening Nigeria’s health systems and aligning with global health goals.
