In a historic meeting, the Okuokpellagbe of Okpella, HRH Engr Lukman Akemokue, paid a royal visit to the Ohinonyi of Ebira to address the long-standing issues of border hostilities, kidnappings, and insecurity between their communities.
The two traditional rulers engaged in a candid and fruitful conversation, yielding key agreements to foster peace and harmony.
“We have been coexisting as brothers from time immemorial,” said HRH Engr Lukman Akemokue. “It’s time for us to work together to put an end to the hostilities and ensure our people can live in peace.”
The meeting was a significant step towards resolving the lingering issues between the two communities. The traditional rulers acknowledged the need for a permanent solution to the boundary disputes and agreed to expedite the Boundary Monumentation Project. This project aims to establish a clear boundary between the two communities, putting an end to the hostilities.
To further promote peace and understanding, the Okuokpellagbe of Okpella and the Ohinonyi of Ebira agreed to establish joint committees. These committees will comprise strategic and religious leaders from both communities, tasked with developing recommendations for reducing tensions and promoting peace.
The traditional rulers also recognised the importance of collaborating with security agencies to address the issues of kidnapping and other criminal activities at the border. By working together, they aim to support the security agencies in their efforts to ensure the safety and security of the people.
Furthermore, the Okuokpellagbe of Okpella and the Ohinonyi of Ebira emphasised the need to highlight their shared cultural heritage. By emphasising their common cultural ties, the Okpella and Ebira people can foster greater understanding and peaceful coexistence.
As Strategic Communication Assistant Samson Omosotomhe (PhD) noted, “The conversation between the two leaders was deep, honest, and fruitful, with a conviction that sustainable peace and harmony are possible when these recommendations are implemented.”
This historic meeting marks a significant step towards peace and cooperation between the Okpella and Ebira communities. With the commitment of their traditional rulers, the people of Okpella and Ebira can look forward to a brighter future, free from the shackles of conflict and insecurity.
