One common thing about migration is that not everyone will migrate from a place at the same time, especially if the population is large. This is because some families may have aged, sick, pregnant, or other vulnerable members who cannot undertake the journey. Others may not want to move due to their fondness for the location, while some may migrate but prefer another route or destination.
The Igala people are a prime example of this phenomenon, with various groups spread across different states in northern Nigeria. Today, Igala people can still be found in Attagara town, also known as Attah Igala, as well as in Amuda town of Borno State. Some Igala communities are also present in Tangara, Ibi, Taraba State, while others are found in Jama Gara and other parts of Kogi State. Many of these communities still bear the name Attah, which is the title of the Igala king and the name of the progenitor of the Igala people.
Other groups, such as the Bolewa people, also known as Ata-Gara, in Gombe, and the Attagara people of Jega LGA, Kebbi State, are also part of the Igala diaspora. Despite being scattered across different regions, these communities share a common ancestry and heritage. The passage of time and the influence of external factors, such as the adoption of three major languages and the introduction of new religions, have led to the erosion of many Igala languages, vocabularies, names, and cultures.
However, the bond of shared blood and ancestry remains strong. Just like a stream that may dry up, but its name endures, the legacy of the Igala people will continue to thrive. To all the Igala communities mentioned and those not mentioned, the Ambassador of Igala people worldwide extends warm greetings and love. For those interested in reconnecting with the palace of the Attah or His Majesty himself, messages can be sent to me.
God bless us all.
