A recent open letter addressed to Bashir Gegu, an appointee of the Kogi State government, has expressed deep concern over the violent attacks on supporters of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Korton Kerfi and Geregu.
“The reoccurring situation in Korton Kerfi and Geregu is unacceptable… It’s crucial at this point we appeal to the peace-loving people to refrain from taking the law into their own hands, but it’s important to protect yourselves and be prepared to defend against any threats from Bashir Gegu and his thugs,” the letter states.
The author, Isaiah Davies Ijele, condemns the violence and urges Gegu to “reconsider your actions and work towards resolving conflicts through dialogue and understanding among your people.” He reminds Gegu that “no one should have the right or monopoly to inflict harm on others due to political disagreements” and that “power is transient.”
Ijele also calls on Governor Ododo to distance himself from individuals who promote violence and thuggery, stating that “we must work together to ensure that these troublemakers are held accountable for their actions and are not allowed to disrupt the peace and safety of the citizens of Korton Kerfi.”
The letter concludes by emphasising that “the safety and well-being of all individuals, regardless of their political beliefs, should be our top priority. Together, we can create a better and more harmonious environment for everyone.”
