Pakistan has signed a $5 billion deal with China to acquire eight Hangor-class diesel-electric submarines, significantly boosting its naval capabilities. The deal, which includes technology transfer, will see four submarines built in China and the remaining four assembled in Pakistan’s Karachi Shipyard.
“We are aware that China is supplying submarines and ships to Pakistan. We are monitoring everything closely, and the Indian Navy is fully prepared,” said Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, Vice Chief of Naval Staff of the Indian Navy, highlighting the regional implications of the deal.
The submarines, equipped with advanced sensors and weaponry, are expected to enhance Pakistan’s underwater warfare capabilities and support its strategic interests in the North Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean. “The project is proceeding as per the timeline. We expect that these submarines will join the Pakistan Navy fleet very soon,” said Admiral Naveed Ashraf, Chief of Naval Staff of the Pakistan Navy.
The deal reflects the deepening strategic partnership between Pakistan and China, with Beijing strengthening its presence in the Indian Ocean region. As part of the agreement, Pakistan will also receive advanced training and technology sharing, bolstering its indigenous shipbuilding capabilities.
