Pastor Jamal Bryant Launches Project 5-5-5 to Combat Voter Suppression

STONECREST, GEORGIA - APRIL 15: Pastor Jamal Bryant speaks onstage during New Birth Missionary Baptist Church ‘The Return’ Good Friday Service at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church on April 15, 2022 in Stonecrest, Georgia. The Easter weekend event kicked off on April 15, welcoming back church goers with an in-person church worship after a 2 year hiatus because of the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic. In a bold move to mobilize voting drives across Georgia, Pastor Dr. Jamal H. Bryant kicked off Project 5-5-5 at The Carter Center in Atlanta. The initiative aims to counter the conservative Republican agenda Project 2025 and promote voter education, registration, and mobilization.

“We’re going to lockdown Wesley Chapel, Candler Rd. You will see us in forces,” declared Darrell Taylor, president of the Kappa’s Decatur chapter, emphasizing the importance of youth involvement.

Dr. Johnni Cruse Craig, social action chair of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., stressed, “Voter suppression tactics reveal themselves as fruits of oppression. As informed voters, our fruit manifests as social action—Capital A-C-T!”

Pastor Bryant highlighted the need for voter education, saying, “We’ve been pushing people to get out to vote, but not voter education. This is a maturing season for Black America to not vote on personality, but to vote on policy.”

Project 5-5-5 has set ambitious goals, including registering 2,000 Black men to vote and conducting a major voter registration drive on October 5. New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, led by Pastor Bryant, will play a key role in the initiative, utilizing a fleet of vehicles to reach senior centers and college campuses.

As Yatonya Oliver, president of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.’s Lambda Epsilon Omega Chapter, emphasized, “Getting into ‘good trouble’ is not a solo event.” Project 5-5-5 has brought together national organizations and public advocates to combat voter suppression and promote democracy.
