The Guinean Football Federation has appointed Paulo Duarte, a 56-year-old Portuguese national, as the new head coach of the Syli National.
Duarte is set to be officially presented to the press on Tuesday as the team intensifies preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Duarte brings extensive experience in African football, having previously managed Burkina Faso (2007–2012 and 2016–2019), Gabon (2012–2013), and Togo (2021–2024).
His most recent role was with Saudi Arabian club Al-Kholood, where he worked until October 2024 before terminating his contract.
Duarte had also succeeded Frenchman Claude Le Roy as Togo’s coach in 2021, holding the position until June 2024.
Guinea is currently struggling in the World Cup qualifying campaign. Sitting fifth in Group G with seven points, the team faces stiff competition from Algeria, Botswana, Uganda, Somalia, and Mozambique.
The Syli National’s recent performances have disappointed fans, and the country parted ways with former coach Kaba Diawara in 2024 after a string of poor results.
Duarte arrived in Conakry on Sunday and immediately met with Sports Minister Kéamou Bogola Haba and officials from the Guinean Football Federation to outline his priorities.
He has been tasked with reviving Guinea’s faltering campaign and restoring national pride. His immediate challenge will be the qualifier against Somalia on 5 September.
The two sides previously played out a goalless draw on 22 March 2025, leaving Guinea desperate for a win to revive their hopes.
Beyond World Cup qualification, Duarte will also be expected to prepare Guinea for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Supporters are optimistic that his experience across several African national teams can bring stability and discipline back to the squad.
