The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a senior member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, Samsideen Oladiti, for his alleged involvement in murder and violent assault.
The 55-year-old, widely known as “Shamelon,” was taken into custody following two separate incidents on Lagos Island.
According to police reports, Oladiti was first linked to an assault that occurred on August 28, 2025. During the altercation, he allegedly used a metallic ring to strike a man repeatedly on the head and face, leaving him with severe injuries. Despite receiving medical care, the victim died on September 17, and his body was later deposited at the mortuary for an autopsy.
On the same day of the victim’s death, another violent act was traced to the suspect. At about 3 p.m., Oladiti reportedly attacked a dispatch rider using a helmet and his fists, leaving the victim in critical condition. The rider was rushed to a hospital, placed on oxygen, and is still receiving treatment.
The suspect’s arrest came after residents staged a protest at his office in Sandgrouse Market, Lagos Island. The protest, sparked by news of the victim’s death, saw sympathizers of the deceased set two motorcycles belonging to Oladiti on fire. Lagos Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, led a team of officers to the scene to calm tensions and prevent further unrest.
Oladiti has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Panti-Yaba, where detectives have opened a deeper probe into the cases.
Meanwhile, the Lagos NURTW chairman, Mustapha Adekunle, also known as Sego, has disowned Oladiti’s actions. He stressed that the union does not support violent behavior or unlawful acts. He further explained that the union would apply its own disciplinary process if the suspect is found guilty after the police investigation and legal process are completed.
The police have appealed to Lagos residents to remain law-abiding and cooperate with investigators. Authorities assured that justice will be pursued in all the cases connected to the suspect.
