The Nigeria Police Force has refuted online reports suggesting that the Enugu State Government’s official account was hacked, resulting in the theft of N1.09 billion.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, described the allegations as “completely unfounded,” clarifying that no cyber breach or hacking incident had occurred.
The statement explained that the incident involved a case of procurement fraud rather than a cyber-related crime.
According to the police, the National Cyber Crime Centre (NCCC) led the investigation, which culminated in the arrest of a suspect linked to the fraud. The stolen funds have since been recovered.
To strengthen financial security, the Enugu State Government and other ministries, departments, and agencies have collaborated with the NCCC to implement fortified measures aimed at safeguarding their systems.
The NPF also stated its commitment to assisting government bodies in protecting their resources against fraud and other financial crimes.
The police urged the public to refrain from spreading misinformation, advising citizens to verify the credibility of news sources before sharing.
“False narratives not only mislead the public but also erode trust in government institutions,” the statement noted.
The NPF reassured Nigerians of their dedication to transparency and the security of public funds.
