The Edo State Police Command on Monday confirmed the recovery of ₦300,000 from officers who allegedly extorted a furniture maker in Benin City.
The officers, attached to the Oba Market Area Command, were identified after a video of the incident surfaced online.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Moses Yamu, explained that the officers involved had been arrested and are now facing internal disciplinary actions in line with police regulations. He noted that the extorted money had already been returned to the victim.
The command also took administrative steps against the Oba Market Area Command to improve discipline, professionalism, and respect for citizens’ rights during police operations. The Commissioner of Police in Edo, Monday Agbonika, urged residents to report any form of misconduct by officers through the complaints channels provided by the command.
The Police Command stated that it remains committed to ensuring accountability and integrity among its officers and thanked the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 5, Salman Dogo, for his support in strengthening transparent policing across the state.
This action comes months after the Nigeria Police Force in May began disciplinary proceedings against six officers, including a senior officer, after they were caught in a viral extortion case along the Benin Bypass. At the time, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, described their behavior as unacceptable and ordered their trial under the police internal system.
