The Cross River State Police Command has launched an investigation into an illegal mortuary uncovered in Isong Inyang Community, Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State, following the recovery of eight decomposed bodies from the facility.
The Command’s spokesperson, ASP Eitokpah Sunday, disclosed in a statement that the discovery was made on February 13, 2026, after credible intelligence was received regarding suspicious activities at a local embalmment hall located along the Calabar Ikom Highway.
According to the statement, police operatives were deployed to the scene at about 11:56 hours to verify the information. Upon inspection, officers found eight dried corpses inside the premises.
A suspect identified as Sunday Ben Reuben, a native of Nsit Ibom in Akwa Ibom State, was arrested in connection with the incident. Preliminary findings indicate that he works as a mortician attached to Enghaut Company Mortuary in Akamkpa Local Government Area.
The suspect remains in police custody while investigations continue to determine the circumstances surrounding the operation and whether any laws were violated.
The Command urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information, assuring that further updates will be provided as investigations progress.
