President Biya in Good Health, Cameroon’s Presidency Dispels Death Rumours

The Cameroonian Presidency has issued a stern statement to dispel persistent rumors surrounding President Paul Biya’s health, declaring that he is in excellent condition and actively carrying out his duties.

In a release on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, the Head of the Civil Cabinet, Mvondo Ayolo, categorically denied speculation about Biya’s health, stating:

“The President of the Republic has been in Geneva, Switzerland, since his return from Beijing, China, where he attended the China-African summit in September. He has been conducting his daily activities without interruption and is in good health.”

This reassurance comes after a month-long absence from Cameroon sparked widespread speculation about Biya’s well-being, with many alleging advanced health issues.

Ayolo’s statement sought to calm the waters, emphasizing:

“The Civil Cabinet strongly condemns the malicious spread of false information aimed at disturbing public opinion and breaching the principles of responsible freedom of speech.”

The Presidency’s move aims to reassure Cameroonians, international partners, and investors about the stability and continuity of the government.

President Biya, 91, has been at the helm of Cameroon since 1982, making him one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders. His leadership has been the subject of academic interest, with researchers exploring factors contributing to his enduring rule.

Experts point to Biya’s ability to maintain support from key segments of the population, particularly French-speaking regions, as crucial to his longevity. Additionally, his strategic navigation of the country’s complex ethnic and regional dynamics has helped him maintain power.

Biya’s absence from the public eye had sparked concerns about potential succession struggles and instability in the Central African nation.

The Presidency’s statement has been welcomed by government supporters, who see it as a reassuring message.

“We are relieved to hear that President Biya is in good health,” said Emmanuel Ngalle, a Yaoundé resident and ruling party supporter. “This puts an end to unnecessary speculation and allows us to focus on the country’s development.”

However, opposition groups and critics remain skeptical, questioning the lack of transparency surrounding Biya’s health and governance.

“This is not the first time the Presidency has denied health rumors,” said Dr. Fontem Neba, an opposition leader. “We need more transparency and accountability, not just reassurances.”

As Cameroon prepares for future elections, the debate surrounding Biya’s leadership and legacy is likely to continue.
